When we think about the rooms in our house, normally we consider the garage to be a giant mud room. I mean really, we drive our cars there we do or woodworking there we may do are exercising their end to the garage usually becomes a catchall storage space for the entire family.
But your garage is not invincible — there’s some things that you do need to do to keep it usable, one of those things is to make sure that you haveĀ properly installed garage door seals. Your garage door threshhold seal is an important part of your overall garage door insulation scheme. It doesn’t do a whole lot of good to have individual door panels heavily insulated against the influx of cold or hot weather, only to let the same link around the edges of the garage door, or in between the bottom of the garage door and the threshold.
We’re going to be discussing the overall garage door weather seal techniques in another post. This time I want to concentrate on your garage door bottom seal. Here are just a few of the reasons why you want to make sure that when you do your garage door insulation project, you don’t neglect this important part of the equation:
- Obviously number one is energy savings. An opening at the bottom of the garage door is a problem even in summer, but in the winter it is going to produce a brisk very cold draft as the heavier cold air from the outside runs into your warm garage. It’s important to remember that even if your garage is unheated it will still be warm compared to the outside air, and this effect will still occur.

- Moisture and inclement weather. Depending on how you grudges situated, and the prevailing winds in your area, a driving rain may actually flood your garage. Properly sealed garage doors will keep the water out.
- Varmints, bugs and other unwanted visitors will also use the opening provided by the lack of a garage door threshold seal is the point of entry. This may not seem like such a big deal to you, but I’m willing to bet that when mom is in the garage folding laundry she will be very upset when she is introduced to her “new friends”.
Well, I hope I’ve convinced you that the garage door seal is an important part of your garage door upgrade, and that you won’t neglect this.
