Garage Door Panels – Replacement

A homeowner may have many reasons for replacing garage door panels, including getting rid of an ugly dented or damaged panel, and insulating the garage door.  Insulation makes the garage more comfortable to work in, and with some types of garage doors, can equal the “R” values of the rest of the home.

A single damaged garage door panel can ruin the look of the entire garage door. If the damage is extreme, it may be affecting the optimum function of the garage door as well.  With the simple system of garage door panels, there are no obstacles for replacing one or two panels.  If the door is under warranty, contact the manufacturer and find out if panel replacement is covered.

Another practical reason for replacing panels is to install insulation.  Garage door insulation is an effective way to get the most use from your garage.  It also saves energy where the climate goes from extreme hot or humidity, to extreme cold.

Garage Door Insulation Panels Installed

Depending on the style of garage door, panels may slide into and out of the rails for easy installation and removal.  If you plan to insulate an entire garage door, however, consider hiring a professional, or have the company you purchase from install them.

For the handy homeowner, garage door insulation kits are available, which make the job go much quicker.  A typical foam panel insulation kit will increase the “R” value of the garage to 4.5 with 1 1/4″ thickness panels.

Removing and replacing one or two panels is a job suited for the homeowner.  You will need to detach the hinge from both sides of the panel being removed, and you may need to remove several garage door panels to get to those being removed.

To replace the damaged panels, reverse the process by sliding the new panel into the track and tightening the bolts or screws holding it in place.  Attach the hinges and you are done.

When the garage door is being replaced by door panels, shop for an “R” value equivalent to your homes insulation.  This may not be available in panel insulation kits, so find the closest approximation.  Insulation is available in several different types.

Fiberglass insulation panels are resistant to mildew and corrosion, and may allow you to qualify for a tax credit due to energy savings. You can also use foam insulation panels.  Laminated for durability, these come pre-cut for fast installation. If you are replacing an entire garage door, purchase it with pre-insulated panels, available in any style you choose.
