Today we take a quick look at some of the different kinds of garage door insulation kits available out there. They differ primarily in whether they are a made to order kit for your particular garage door or simply material that you will cut and install yourself.
For our purposes today we’re going to look at some of the components that go into a garage door insulation upgrade and the differences between them.
- Reflective foil insulation. This material typically consists of two layers of foil either silver or sometimes cover with white vinyl sandwiched around a core. The core could be made of Styrofoam bubble film or any other light insulated material.
- Panel foam garage door insulation is usually a sort of expanded polystyrene with plastic on either side. These are very light weight as well as being moisture resistant.
- Thresholds and the bottom seals. These are very important but often overlooked factor in insulating your garage door. Not only does your bottom seal/threshold help to retain heat and prevent energy loss, it will also help to keep out moisture and pets. The kind of threshold and bottom seal you use will depend upon the type of derived garage door and your garage floor as well. One note: you may have trouble getting seals to stick to concrete garage floors that have been painted or treated with any slick covering.

If you live in an older home you may want to take a look at replacing the garage door seal on the bottom of the door itself. The technique of using a door bottom bubble seal is common, especially when the garage floor is polished or finished concrete. Your bubble seal should be flexible — not hard or brittle and compress easily when the garage door is closed.
None of the insulating materials themselves are typically difficult to install, and most of the kits offered will include the adhesives that you need and advice on how to apply them to different garage door insulation materials. Some kits will even include the tools required to get the job done.
